It Isnt About You. Its About Him
My Original Understanding of my life
I have always considered myself to be special. Perhaps it is to do with the fact that I was always told that I was by my Grandmother or because I was often liked by my friends parents even when the their other friends were not. Or it was the fact that I never actually met anyone else called Jonah until I was 28. It was actually really awful when I finally did (Sorry Jonah!).
Either way, I always thought my life was about me and ever since then I have sought the conclusion and sense of completion of my own story. It was an immense pressure in my life to find the beginning and the end of my own problems and to see victory from my own perspective.
My Change in Perspective
But recently, I have had to come to the realisation that my life is not about me at all. It is about the God that made me. He, unlike me, is eternal and has the eternal in mind. He sees the whole picture, from the beginning to the end (Rev 1:8). My life is a very small piece of the much larger tapestry that he created. Its not the centre piece. It isn't even the main colour of the picture (unless you want to count the blood that covers me) (Rom 1:7).
Why this is powerful and life changing
This allows us not to find contentment in the circumstances of our lives, nor in our perceived progress but in Him. Knowing that we are a part of his story and serve his purposes allows us relief, knowing that the hefty weight of life can be made light by that fact that he is God (Psalm 90:2).
I believe this gives us the opportunity to try things and to make mistakes. It puts us in our place and we can practically ask what we can best do with ourselves for him, without feeling the pressure to perform something we were never meant to - bringing an end to everything.
Nor do we have to become something in order to complete the plot that we cannot even comprehend in our mortality. We can rest, actually, knowing that God works all things together for the good of those that love him (Rom 8:28).
Be yourself. Be content in knowing him and in your circumstances. Ask him what he wants from your life. Pray into it and just put one foot in front of the other knowing that nothing can separate you from his love (Rom 8:38) nor can the plans of God fail (Isa 14:27) and that our ultimate purpose is found in him..
